Last updated: November 2026
Most Irish bedrooms need a 7,000-9,000 BTU portable air conditioner. In Irish shops in November 2026 these cost €389-€500 and draw 780-1,005 watts, which is 27c-35c an hour at 35c/kWh. Every portable unit needs a hose out through a window. Ireland gets few truly hot days: the warmest summer on record, 2026, peaked at 32.2°C. This guide gives sizes, costs, noise levels and prices from real spec sheets.
⚡ Quick Summary

🌿 Size: 7,000-8,000 BTU for a bedroom up to about 20 m². 12,000-14,000 BTU for a room of 25-35 m².
🌿 Running cost: 27c-61c an hour at 35c/kWh. A bedroom unit for 8 hours is about €2.20-€2.80.
🌿 Prices (November 2026): from €389 for 7,000 BTU, €600-€760 for 12,000-16,000 BTU, up to €1,099 for a De'Longhi Wi-Fi model.
🌿 Noise: 42 dB on the quietest spec sheet, 65 dB on the loudest.

🌿 Air coolers are not air conditioners. They add water to the air.
🌡️ Ireland Gets a Few Hot Days a Year, but More Than Before
Summer 2026 was the warmest summer on record in Ireland, with a national average of 16.28°C, according to Met Éireann. The top temperature was 32.2°C at Athenry, Co Galway, on 25 June 2026. Moore Park, Co Cork, set a station record of 23 days over 25°C.
In 2024, only three of Met Éireann's main weather stations had even one day over 25°C. The average July high at Dublin Airport from 1991 to 2020 was 19.5°C.
🌿 2026: heatwaves in June and July, including a 13-day heatwave at Moore Park in July.
🌿 2025: 32.2°C at Connemara National Park on 13 July 2025.
🌿 2022: 33.0°C at the Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 18 July 2022. Only 33.3°C at Kilkenny Castle on 26 June 1887 was higher.
🌿 Days over 30°C do not happen every year, and only in June, July or August.
Warm nights are the main reason people buy one. In summer 2026, ten stations had their warmest night-time low on record. If you struggle on only two or three nights a year, a fan may be enough. See our fan vs air conditioner guide.
📏 A 7,000-9,000 BTU Unit Suits Most Bedrooms
Pick the size from the floor area: length times width in metres. Every maker prints a recommended room size, and these ranges come from their spec sheets.
🌿 Up to about 20 m²: 7,000-8,000 BTU. Meaco rates its 7,000 BTU unit for 4-21 m² and its 8,000 BTU unit for 12-22 m².
🌿 About 16-26 m²: 9,000 BTU. Dimplex rates its DPAC901 for 16-26 m², depending on which way the room faces.
🌿 About 18-30 m²: 10,000-12,000 BTU. Meaco: 18-28 m² and 20-30 m².
🌿 About 25-35 m²: 12,000-14,000 BTU. Dimplex DPAC1201: 21-35 m². Meaco 14,000 BTU: 25-35 m².
🌿 35-40 m²: 16,000 BTU, the biggest unit on Meaco's Irish site.
🌿 Bigger or open-plan: a fixed air-to-air heat pump suits better.
For a sunny room or a room under the roof, pick from the top of the range.
🔹 Cooling kW is not the electricity the unit uses
BTU and cooling kW measure the heat taken out of the room. 12,000 BTU is 3.5 kW on the Dimplex DPAC1201. That unit gives 3.5 kW of cooling from 1,350 W of electricity.
One Irish shop lists the De'Longhi Pinguino EL98 as "2700 Watt power output". That is its cooling. The EU energy database says it uses 1 kWh an hour.
🪟 Every Portable Needs a Hose Out a Window
A portable air conditioner sends the room's heat outside through a wide hose. The hose goes out a window or through a hole in the wall. Without it, the hot air stays in the room.
🌿 Hose length: 1.8 m on Meaco units, 1.5 m on the Dimplex DPAC1201, 1.2 m on the De'Longhi EL98. The unit must stand that close to the window.
🌿 Hose width: about 15 cm, so the window stays partly open.
🌿 Window kits: Meaco includes a hard panel for sash windows and a fabric seal for other windows. Dimplex includes a Velcro kit for side-opening and top-opening windows.
🌿 Wall option: the De'Longhi Pinguino ES72 comes with a wall flange.
🔹 Single hose units pull warm air in through gaps
EU rules name two types. A single duct unit takes air from the room and blows it outside. A double duct unit takes air from outside through one hose and sends it back out through a second.
Every model in this guide that lists its hose has one exhaust hose. The air it pushes out is replaced by air coming in under doors and around windows. On a hot day that air is warm, so keep the door shut and fit the window kit.
💶 Running Costs: 27c to 61c an Hour at 35c/kWh
Cost per hour is the unit's watts divided by 1,000, times your price per kWh. These are full-power figures at 35c/kWh. The compressor stops once the room reaches the set temperature, so real use is often lower.
🌿 780 W (Meaco Pro 7000, Black & Decker 7,000 BTU): 27c an hour, €2.18 for 8 hours.
🌿 980-1,005 W (Dimplex DPAC901, Meaco Pro 8000): 34c-35c an hour.
🌿 1 kWh an hour (De'Longhi EL98): 35c an hour, €2.80 for 8 hours.
🌿 1,120 W (Meaco Pro 10000): 39c an hour.
🌿 1,350 W (Meaco 12000, Dimplex DPAC1201): 47c an hour, €3.78 for 8 hours.
🌿 1,550-1,750 W (Meaco 14000 and 16000): 54c-61c an hour.
A 780 W unit for 6 hours on 20 nights uses 93.6 kWh, about €33 for the summer. A 1,350 W unit is about €57. On a NightSaver plan at about 18c, a unit using 1 kWh an hour costs about 18c an hour at night.
🔹 Portable air conditioner size and running cost calculator
Indicative estimates only. Size bands follow the recommended room sizes on Meaco, Dimplex and Black & Decker spec sheets for units sold in Ireland in November 2026. Wattages are rated cooling input figures from those spec sheets; check the label on yours. Costs assume the unit runs at full power for every hour you enter. Standing charges are not included.
🔇 No Portable Unit Is Silent: 42-65 dB on the Spec Sheets
The compressor sits in the room with you, so every portable unit makes noise. The lowest figure in this guide is 42 dB, on the Meaco 14,000 and 16,000 BTU inverter units on their quiet setting.
🌿 Meaco 14000 and 16000 inverter: 42-51 dB.
🌿 Meaco 12000: 45-51 dB.
🌿 De'Longhi Pinguino EL98: 47-50 dB.
🌿 Meaco Pro 7000, 8000 and 10000: 52-55 dB.
🌿 Black & Decker 7,000 BTU: 56 dB.
🌿 Dimplex DPAC901: 65 dB (the shop page does not say which kind of figure).
"Sound pressure" is what you hear in the room. "Sound power" is a bigger number for the same unit. The De'Longhi EL98 is 47-50 dB sound pressure but 64 dB sound power. Compare like with like. For a bedroom, pick an inverter unit with a quiet mode.

🏷️ Every Class Listed Here Is A, and Every Refrigerant Is R290
Every spec sheet in this guide that gives an energy class says A. Under EU rules, class A for a portable unit means an efficiency score (EER) of 2.60 to 3.10. The De'Longhi EL98 scores 2.6, the bottom of class A.
🌿 Read the kWh per hour on the label. EU labels for portable units show energy use per 60 minutes. Multiply it by your rate to get the cost per hour.
🌿 R290 refrigerant: every model above that names its refrigerant uses R290. The EU energy database lists its global warming potential as 3.
🧊 Air Coolers Add Water to the Air and Do Not Cool a Room Like Air Conditioners
An "air cooler" blows air over wet pads, so the air in front of it feels cooler. Duux, a fan and air cooler brand, says an air cooler does not cool a room like an air conditioner, and the area in front of it drops by 4-5°C.
🌿 No hose, no compressor, no refrigerant. That is why it is cheap and needs no window.
🌿 It makes the room more humid. An air conditioner makes the air drier.
🌿 It suits dry climates. An expert quoted by Homebuilding.co.uk says air coolers are of limited use in the UK.
🌿 Shops mix them up. In November 2026, Euronics.ie's air conditioning section included Shark mist fans from €159.99.
Bladeless fans are not air conditioners either. Our Dyson air conditioner guide explains what Dyson's models do.
💧 Dry Mode Removes Up to 1.7 Litres of Water an Hour
Most portable units have a dehumidify or "dry" mode. Meaco lists 0.8 litres an hour for its 7,000 BTU unit and 1.7 litres an hour for its 14,000 BTU unit. The spec sheets give no lower wattage for dry mode. For damp in winter, a dehumidifier is built for the job and uses far less power.
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
🌿 Buying an air cooler or mist fan by mistake: no exhaust hose and no BTU rating means it is not an air conditioner.
🌿 Reading cooling kW as electricity: a "2.7 kW" unit can use 1 kWh an hour.
🌿 Buying too small: a 7,000 BTU unit is rated for 21-28 m² on the spec sheets, not a 35 m² living room.
🌿 Leaving the window wide open: fit the window kit.
🌿 Expecting silence in a bedroom: the quietest spec sheet says 42 dB.
🌿 Waiting for the heatwave: most listings here were out of stock in November 2026.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
🔹 How much does a portable air conditioner cost to run in Ireland?
About 27c-61c an hour at 35c/kWh, for 780 W to 1,750 W units. Our appliance running costs guide compares other appliances.
🔹 Can I use a portable air conditioner without a window?
Only if the hose goes through a wall. Some De'Longhi models come with a wall flange. The hot air must go outside or the room will not cool.
🔹 Is a portable air conditioner worth it in Ireland?
It depends on the room. 2025 and 2026 were record warm summers with warm nights, but days over 30°C do not happen every year. A bedroom under the roof or facing the afternoon sun gains the most.
🔹 Can a portable air conditioner heat a room?
Some can. The Dimplex DPAC1201 gives 2.5 kW of heat from 980 W. Meaco sells heating versions of its 12,000-16,000 BTU units for €20-€35 more.
